I’m looking to have a low key meet-up over drinks at one of Portland’s many delicious cocktail bars. If interested, please drop me a line at Sarah@makelovenotporn.tv with the subject line: PDX meet-up.

Feeling a bit shy? Please don’t — after meeting other current and future MLNPstars in both New York and London, I can confidently say we are lucky enough to have some of the sweetest and most gracious community members around!

Interested in learning more about why our MLNPstars love sharing their #realworldsex on MLNP.tv? Check out our MLNPstars Speak section.

Secretly longing to share your #realworldsex on MLNP.tv but can’t quite bring yourself to? Have a #realworldsex video you want to post but haven’t gotten up the nerve to hit ‘submit’? You’re keen, your partner isn’t – or vice versa? Worried about how you look? We celebrate #realworldbodies – so don’t be shy, be proud!

I’m looking to meet anyone and everyone in PDX interested in sharing their #realworldsex – couples, singles, or whatever your particular arrangement may be. Come with your partner or alone, or bring a friend who’s also interested.

Help us represent as many identities, communities and possibilities as we can! While MLNP.tv currently isn’t as diverse as we’d like it to be – we’re serious about changing that. In particular, we welcome people of color, other marginalized folks, and those who identify under the LGBTQ+ umbrella to attend this meet-up.

Finally, it goes without saying that you should be familiar with what we mean by #realworldsex and what we look for when we curate.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you and can’t wait to meet you in Portland!

10 Scientific, Practical Reasons Why Morning Sex Should Be a Bigger Part of Your Life / BUSTLE

Written by Becca Grimm for BUSTLE. Originally published on January 8th, 2015.

bustle

When it comes to having morning sex, the early bird catches the … I’m not even gonna finish that one. We’ll stick with this: Rise and bang, y’all. There’s much more than double-shot espressos or punishing treadmill poundings waiting on the other end of an early wake-up call. Morning sex has so many perks that you’ll forget it was ever tempting to hit snooze.

For whatever reason, conventional sex culture holds a powerful association between boning and nighttime. For most people, canoodling time traditionally comes at the close of a day, when both parties are wiped out, hair askew, nerves fried. The hours before sleep usually sees us with bodies depleted of the spirit and vigor necessary to make sex anything other than relatively blah. Plus, it’s dark, so what are you even looking at right now? Often, when a workday starts winding itself down, the only thing that sounds particularly enticing is takeout and your couch. Sometimes, you can summon enthusiasm to get yourself and another person off, but liiike … shouldn’t you want it more than that? It doesn’t have to be this way, guys.

Not that I don’t get why we tend to put sexy time at the end of the day in our mental planners. It’s usually before sleep, when couples are spending any awake time in bed together. In the morning, it’s all about soaking up as many moments of sleep as possible, so there isn’t a lot of downtime before you actually have to get up. For pairs who are still dating, that mostly happens at night. But all of that aside, doesn’t it seem more logical that we would enjoy sex more if we did it during a time of day when our bodies were rested and fresh, with all of our nerves ready to do their most pleasurable jobs?

It’s time we shine some complimentary light on this hugely underrated (and underrepresented), glorious breed of getting busy. You can make yourself a morning person, despite natural tendencies telling you not to. You might as well make yourself a morning person who also scores. There is seriously no reason to stay up all night to get lucky.

It Relaxes You For The Day Ahead

It’s hard to let bad traffic annoy you when you pull onto the highway alreadymad chill. “Couple sex with a cup of coffee for a fantastic start to your day … it’s more relaxing than a wake and bake,” VICE sex columnist Sophie St. Thomas told Bustle. Such truth. Getting off first thing in the morning can be kinda like a big bong rip or a consolidated yoga class — it calms frazzled nerves.

It Turns Your Brain On

Orgasms are good for your brain. Not only does la petite mort increase oxygen and blood flow to this vital organ, it summons other various nutrients as well. Essentially, having sex can activate your entire brain. YEP.

The Lighting Is Way Flattering

Sure, you’re still a bit out of it and less self-aware than normal, but the fact remains: When the sun hangs low in the sky, its light becomes diffused and softens. The “golden hour” is an actual thing that exists. It happens twice a day, once during the last hour of light before sunset (likely when you’re still at work, possibly enjoying a sad desk salad) and again the first hour after sunrise. I think we know the more realistic option between the two, if you’re looking to get sexy with the most help from nature’s dimmer switch. You can actually find the specific golden hour where you live, and plan accordingly for extra gorgeous grinding.

Why boys need to have conversations about emotional intimacy in classrooms / The Classroom

Written by Amy Schalet for The Conversation. Originally published on February 25th, 2016.

theconversation

Last month, Tom Porton, an award-winning, veteran Bronx high school teacher, handed in his resignation after colliding with the school’s principal. Porton had distributed HIV/AIDS education fliers listing nonsexual ways of “Making Love Without Doin’ It” (including advice to “read a book together”).

What does it say when a teacher who encourages students to discuss nonsexual ways to express love causes controversy? And how do discussions at school about sex affect teenagers? Do adults lose teenagers’ trust when they are not allowed to speak frankly about how to create healthy intimacy?

My cross-national research on adolescent sexuality shows a profound discomfort in American society not just with teenage sex, but with teenage love. And the silence among adults that results – in families, schools and the culture at large – may take a particular toll on adolescent boys.

What does love have to do with it?

Political battles have raged for decades about whether and how public school students in the U.S. should be taught about condoms and other forms of contraception even though the majority of American youth lose their virginity during their teenage years.

The United States has seen more political strife and cultural controversy around adolescent sexuality than many other countries that went through a sexual revolution in the 1960s and ‘70’s. The Netherlands is an interesting comparative case: Like the U.S., Dutch society was culturally conservative in the 1950s. But Dutch society emerged from the sexual revolution with a more positive approach to adolescent sexuality, one that center-stages love.

American curricula tend to focus on physical acts and dangers – disease and pregnancy – often eschewing positive discussions of sexual pleasure or emotional intimacy.

Feminist scholars have critiqued American sex education for its overemphasis of danger and risk, noting the cost to teenage girls. Scholars have argued that the “missing discourse” of girls’ desire impedes their sense of power in and outside of relationships, leaving them poorly equipped to negotiate consent, safety and sexual satisfaction.

But scholars have paid less attention to the missing discourse of teenage love in American sex education, and its effects on boys, who confront a broader culture that provides scant recognition of, or support for, their emotional needs.

The Real Reason Everyone Freaked Out Over Kim Kardashian’s Nude Selfie / The Establishment

$

By Jayn Griffith for The Establishment. Originally published on March 11th, 2016.

theestablishment

Whether you keep up with celebrity affairs or not, you can’t really ignore the Kardashians—and you definitely can’t avoid knowing what people think about them. When Kim Kardashian posted a nude selfie on Twitter this week, there was a smattering of “you go girl” support, but also a wave of criticism about her immodesty or her pathological need for attention. The response from the public and from other celebrities said a lot about what we think of Kim Kardashian, but even more about what we think of women’s bodies and sexuality. In a culture where we see billboard-sized images of boobs on the daily, why is it this nude picture that makes everyone clutch their pearls?

When a woman is depicted in a sexualized way, with no depth beyond her appearance in order to sell beer, cars, or sandwiches, we call it advertising. We see it everywhere in public space and in media, and hardly anyone ever objects.

When overtly sexual or nude photos and videos of women are posted online or nude photos are printed in magazines, we call it porn. We don’t see it everywhere in the public space, but we’re aware of its ubiquity, and as a culture we look the other way. We say, “Boys will be boys.” Looking at porn is as all-American as sneaking a look at your father’s Playboy. Yet being a porn star is considered incredibly shameful for a young woman.

It’s okay to look at porn. It’s okay to consume images of women’s bodies. It’s not okay to offer up your body to be seen.

The women in porn are almost always presented as passive to the male gaze, unyielding, with no complication of a personality, no danger to the male ego of possibly hearing the word “no,” existing only for the pleasure of men’s eyes. The women in advertising are often cut up into body parts—just a midriff, just a pair of legs—or turned into objects. Those are the times a woman’s form and sexuality are acceptable. But if you are a woman just feeling yourself and expressing your sexuality, presenting yourself the way you feel like at any given moment, or leveraging your own power or sexual energy, you are condemned and disrespected, maybe even threatened, assaulted, or killed.

When a woman is feeling good about the way she looks—empowered, beautiful, or confident in her appearance—and expresses this feeling by taking a photo of herself, clothed or nude, and sharing it online, we punish her. We call her names like “slut,” “trash,” “attention-starved,” “a bad mother,” “a bad role model.” If her photos are stolen, we say she deserved it. The message is that it’s okay to commodify a woman’s body, it’s okay to co-opt female sexuality, as long as the woman in question is passive in it and it’s for someone else’s commercial gain or the express use of men’s sexual titillation and gratification.

When it comes to #realworldsex, lingerie is for every body

$

As a tip of the hat to National Lingerie Day on April 24th, our latest edition MakeLingerieLoveNotPorn is all about dressing up and having fun #realworldsex-style! While it’s not exactly news that frolicking in a gussied up pair of knickers can be fun, we think this holiday is a great excuse to highlight the way that getting #dressedup is as much about how it makes the wearer feel, as it is about whoever they might be wearing it in front of, be it a lover or a mirror!

Playing with clothing designed specifically for the boudoir can evoke different moods, enhance role-play, and allow us to tap into new and exciting fantasies. And, as hardcore lingerie lovers like MLNPstars Redfox and Rickat, know, once the mood is set, it has the power to transform an ordinary day by helping to create the mental and emotional space for something magical to happen.

As we’ve witnessed on MLNP.tv, it’s not just women who enjoy slipping on a lil somethin’ somethin’ to enhance their natural form — lingerie-play is for every body! Whether it’s Colin wearing something sheer and strappy while worshipping Gray, or Richard Coyote donning his fave pink cape and spandex briefs to transform into a queer superhero, we’re thrilled to have videos that showcase #realworldguys having fun with their underthings. What’s more, we love drawing attention to the fact that — surprise! — folks who have sex with guys like seeing their lovers try out different barely-there looks and often give feedback and suggestions, too.

Another way to have #realworldfun with lingerie can be to get all decked out with your sweetie and then do an underthings switcheroo! I mean how cute and coy was it when Ember put on VonBettie’s Valentine’s Day gift and then made her partner unwrap it by undressing her? That, plus the fact that Ember doesn’t normally wear lacy undies, drove Von Bettie (and us) wild! Or, how about when Tabby asked Monkey to wear her panties and he eagerly obliged? Or, Doris and Don getting in the mood on their 28th wedding anniversary by taking turns wearing either a saucy garter and stockings or a tank top and briefs?

The sheer (heh) joy our MLNPstars experience when getting dressed up in lingerie, and the gender-bending fun that sometimes ensues, tickles us in all the right ways. We love how dressing up as part of #realworldsex helps them go somewhere new — somewhere where gender fluidity reigns and they feel great in their bodies.

Virtual Fantasy Closet with Colin/Gray. Meow!

Recently, we were absolutely blown away by queer-owned lingerie company, Bluestockings Boutique, when they did a campaign where #realworld LGBTQA+ folks posed in cute and gender and body-affirming underthings. We think that Aerie’s decision not to photoshop models in their underwear campaigns is an admirable step toward embracing #realworldbodies in advertising, as is Mia Pielle Alpha‘s line of women’s basics that finally satisfies the desire/need for nude underwear that actually matches a more #realworld range of skin tones.

MLNP.tv would love to do a brand partnership with a like-minded lingerie company that’s daring enough to show their wares in #realworldsex action, worn by #realworldbodies! If you’re a brand that’s interested in this, or think you might know one, get in touch with cindy@mlnp.tv!

Finally, we couldn’t talk about people stripping down to their skivvies and getting real without mentioning the fabulous What’s Underneath Project, which showcases “how style is not the clothes you wear, but the unabashed spirit within.” We were thrilled that MLNP CEO, Cindy Gallop, took part in the project by showing us what’s underneath her glam attire.

How do you play with lingerie? We can’t get enough of folks dressing up to get down and hope you’ll submit your #dressedup #realworldsex, soon!

Most Boys Who View Porn Think It’s Realistic, And More Reasons We Need Better Sex Education / BUSTLE

Thought it was pretty obvious that mainstream porn is nothing like sex IRL? Not to everyone. In fact, most boys aged 11-16 who have viewed porn think it’s realistic, new research finds, as do nearly 40 percent of girls the same age. The research came from Middlesex University and was commissioned by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and the children’s commissioner. They surveyed 1,001 young people from 11-16, and also looked at online discussion forums and discussion groups. Over half of those surveyed had viewed pornography and, according to The Guardian, 53 percent of boys who viewed porn felt it was a realistic depiction of sex, while 39 percent of girls who viewed porn thought the images were realistic. That’s worrying. And the idea that mainstream porn may be shaping people how young people view sex is an issue.

“As the founder and CEO of MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, Cindy Gallop, first pointed out in her 2009 TED talk, our society’s inability to talk openly and honestly about sex combined with the ready availability of free hardcore porn online has led to porn becoming today’s default sex education in not a good way,” Sarah Beall, curator and community manager at MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, a website where users can share their #realworldsexvideos, tells Bustle. “The mission of MakeLoveNotPorn can be summed up in three words: talk about it. As in, don’t just talk to your children about sex but be prepared and willing to have a conversation that addresses how the sex you see in porn often isn’t the same as the sex people have in their everyday lives.”

What’s even more worrying is how a lot of children are being exposed to it — and the lack of sex education that accompanies it.

Real Self-Care: More Than Just Taking A Bath (sex, politics and other non-traditional acts of caring for selves) / Unveiled Stories

Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 1.05.51 PM

I’ve been working in human services for about 15 years now, so the term ‘self-care’ is as familiar to me as vegemite and cheese sandwiches. I can’t tell you how many times I have been asked in workplaces how I ‘take care of myself’ or how many handouts we give out to help people remember to ‘take care of yourselves’. You all know what I am talking about: take a hot bath; write in your journal; do deep breathing meditation; go for a walk etc. etc. etc…

These things are all SUPER important, and it doesn’t hurt to be reminded once in a while to stop ‘doing stuff’ and just relax or exercise or heap love on yourself or just to get up and take a shower on those really bad days.

But the reality is there is no such thing as one size fits all. And some of the things that are considered ‘not taking care of yourself’ are in actual fact the exact right things for YOU.

So here’s an alternative ‘self-care’ list (and you won’t find ‘taking a hot bath’ anywhere).

Have sex.

Have wonderful consensual fulfilling sex with someone who loves and respects you and your body, and who
you love and respect. This person may not be someone you are in a committed relationship with, but they should be someone who absolutely adores you, who cares for you and your needs, can look you in the eye with love, and makes you feel good about yourself without any kind of empty hole or self-questioning. Have a damn good time.

Masturbate.

Using whatever help you need with your body type and whatever material turns you on (so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else!) There are websites these days portraying sex that celebrates genuine diversity and is not misogynistic or violent featuring a variety of human-looking consenting adults, such as make love not porn where you know the people are real and enjoying themselves. Masturbation is an excellent form of anxiety-relief as well as helping you feel more in control of your own body and giving you a good idea of what turns you on. Make it an event even if you feel nervous.

Make2017LoveNotPorn: The Social Sex Revolution Is Here

$

Written by MLNP CEO & founder, Cindy Gallop.

It’s that time again, when we look back at the past year, and forward to the coming one. And it’s January 2017 and we’re four years old this month! So I wanted to share with you the things we learned in 2016:

1. What we’re all about – social sex – is needed now more than ever.

Our mission at MLNP is very simple: to help make it easier for the world to talk about sex. When we can be open and honest about sex and owning our sexuality, we can teach and promote good sexual values and good sexual behavior and create a universal understanding of what those are in society, to ensure better sexual communication, interaction and relationships, and ultimately happier lives.

2. We have the most amazing MakeLoveNotPornstar community.

Without you our fabulous MakeLoveNotPornstars, we are nothing. Throughout 2016 you continued to wow us with your generosity in sharing your sexual selves, and with how many more of you keep joining us from all around the world to celebrate the wonderful #realworldsex we all have in our #realworldlives. We welcomed 30 new MLNPstars this year, making our community 200-strong since launch. We’re thrilled to say that we published 131 new videos in 2016.

3. We have the most amazing MakeLoveNotPorn community, period.

We love you all. We love that you email us and tell us how MLNP has helped you and how much you support what we are doing, like Matt Storm’s moving postWe love that you are forgiving of the glitches and hiccups that come with a bootstrapping startup, we are so grateful for all your patience, belief and support.

4. We can make amazing things happen together, even with a tiny team.

MLNP is just me, MadamCurator Sarah Beall, Assistant Curator Ariel Martinez and part-time contract developer Lar van der Jagt – and I want to take this opportunity to thank Sarah, Ariel and Lar on behalf of all of us for their incredibly hard work, dedication and commitment throughout the whole of 2016.

5. It’s really, really hard to raise funding for a sextech startup.

I worked through 2016 to try and raise the funding we need to build out the full amazing user experience we really want all of you to have. I’m afraid I haven’t managed it yet. This Fast Company piece is a good summary of the challenges we face – with an entertaining headline.

Here are the things we plan to do in 2017:

1. Give you all a better experience.

Yes, our resources continue to be limited, but we are working hard on doing some things that will give you a more friction-free user experience – particularly those of you who we know have experienced issues registering credit cards/making payments, as per our explanation of why we make it so hard for you to give us your money. Watch this space!

2. Help the category to help ourselves.

When you have a world-changing startup like ours, you have to change the world to fit it, not the other way round. For the past few years I’ve been defining and championing the category MLNP operates insextech – in order to create more receptivity for what we’re doing.

The challenges we’ve faced trying to raise funding for MLNP made me realize that in order to get our own startup funded, we have to get the entire category funded. So as I announced at TheNextWeb conference in New York in November, I’m now working to raise the world’s first and only sextech fund: AllTheSky Holdings with a focus  (not exclusively) on female founders, who are creating some of the most innovative and disruptive ventures in sextech.

3. Scale the Social Sex Revolution – with your help.

We call ourselves the Social Sex Revolution with the emphasis on ‘social’, because at MLNP we’re pioneering a whole new category on the internet – social sex – to revolutionize sexual attitudes and behavior all around the world. We love that you’ve all joined us as Social Sex Revolutionaries, and we want to grow our movement as much as we can. So we were thrilled when Chandelier Creative invited us to spend a week at their Mermaid Ranch last summer. The Front filmed our team and MakeLoveNotPornstar gathering for a ‘Social Sex Revolution’ mini-documentary. Below are a few photos from a very special IRL experience that you can click on to view as a slideshow. The documentary will be launching in a few weeks and we’ll share it with you all when it does!

We’ve also just launched our first ever crowdfunding campaign – first ever because historically crowdfunding platforms have not embraced us, but happily iFundWomen, with its focus on female founders, had no such issues. We are so grateful to those of you who have already supported us here and welcome all further support you can give.

So our plan in 2017 is to break down some more of those pesky barriers that face sextech pioneers, in order to build out and deliver the really great MLNP social sex experience we want to give all of you – because we are so inspired and motivated by the incredible support we get from you our amazing community, every single day. The fact we’re still here, four years on, in the face of considerable obstacles, is because of you.

We can’t thank you enough.

Cindy, Sarah, Ariel, Lar

MLNP is looking for a volunteer community manager and video editors!

Our Montreal-based Madam Curator, Sarah, is looking for Montreal or NYC-based volunteers to assist with community management of MakeLoveNotPorn.com and “in-house” editing of our social SFW content.

The ideal candidate(s) are highly self-motivated with great communication and organizational skills and a passion for spreading the MakeLoveNotPorn message. Attention to detail and a strong interest in mastering the behind the scenes work that contributes to keeping a sextech start-up running are a must.

The majority of this work will be done remotely and independently, with some of the time spent working alongside Madam Curator. This is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate to contribute to something they feel passionate about. The right candidate(s) are those who’ll dazzle us so much with their commitment and skill that we’ll have no choice but to hire them down the line!

We hate that we’re not yet in a place where we can pay more staff. We’re a tiny, bootstrapping team with currently only 1 person paid full time and 2 people working part time (Cindy isn’t paid for the work she does as founder and CEO). As the forward-thinking venture that we are, we’re always looking for the right people to add to our team when the time, and more importantly – funding – comes. We’re proud to say that assistant curator, Ariel, started out as an unpaid intern and has now worked with us paid for 2 years.

MakeLoveNotPorn: The Social Sex Revolution is here! The backstory, behind the scenes photos, and more!

Written by Madam Curator, Sarah Beall.

Hello darlings,

I’m so thrilled to announce that the 15 min SFW documentary MakeLoveNotPorn: The Social Sex Revolution has finally arrived! This project was a labour of love for many people, and one particularly close to my heart. Read on to hear the story behind how the MLNP team and MLNPstars Efi & Walter, Colin/Gray, and FeverDream ended up together capturing the #socialsexrevolution at Mermaid Ranch!

The entirely SFW long trailer for MakeLoveNotPorn: The Social Sex Revolution

In late winter of last year, the MLNP.tv team began working on a very special project. Imagine our delight when Jason Harler of Chandelier Creative reached out to Cindy asking if our team would like to spend a week at Mermaid Ranch working on a project of our choice as part of their Summer of Sex and Love series! One look at the dreamy photos of the ranch and we were hooked. Now we had to decide what kind of project we wanted to complete. With such a beautiful space at our disposal we wanted to create something equally beautiful, and really dig into the transformative power of sex and love.

We took a lot of photos!

As Madam Curator of MLNP.tv, I’ve been uniquely privileged to witness the revolutionary and often life-changing impact sharing #realworldsex has had on our MLNPstars. Since going live in public beta in January 2013, I’ve received a steady flow of testimonials from MLNPstars of all walks of life talking about how the process of capturing their everyday #realworldsexlives has helped them communicate better in their relationships, understand their sexuality more, and given them more confidence asking for what they really want in bed, all while embracing their #realworldbodies in all their messsyawesomehumanness. You can’t make this stuff up — it’s better than we could have hoped when we were concepting this tiny, bootstrapping #socialsex experiment.

From my previous work creating and curating feminist smut, I had a hunch that the entire process of talking about, capturing, and sharing #realworldsex would be enriching for our MLNPstars. And my heart flutters anew every time these brave #socialsexrevolutionaries share their stories. What I didn’t totally anticipate was the transformative effect curating #realworldsex would have on me, and the close relationships I would end up having with our MLNPstars.

When you think about it, the best relationships are built on trust and great communication, and MLNP is a venture built pretty much entirely on those things. Well, those things and vision, grit, and determination in the face of a crazy number of obstacles, but I digress.

Our MLNPstars put their trust in MLNP and Ariel and myself when they submit their most intimate moments for review (!) and we in turn treat them with the utmost gratitude and respect because, this is not hyperbole, they are our superheroes. Without them and their incredible generosity in vulnerability, we would not exist.

Waiting in anticipation of Efi & Walter’s arrival!

In addition to the trust and deep lines of communication established through often years-long email communications and social media #funtimes, MLNP takes the opportunity to meet up IRL with our MLNPstars when a few of us happen to be in the same city at the same time. To date I’ve shared cocktails or at least chatted in person with Colin/Gray, Janira Wolfe, Modesty Ablaze, lovesurfsing, MrandMrsLau, Rickat, Dale Cooper, bzandgloria, VonBettie, Lily Cade, Fox+Aphrodite, Andy+Becky, xxxotter, SaulofHearts and Violet+Rye. Cindy’s friendships with Danny Wylde, Lily LaBeau and Lily Cade was what introduced them to us originally, and one of our former interns made a point of grabbing tacos with Efi & Walter while on vacation in Mexico City.

Side note: Janira Wolfe actually found out about MLNP from MLNPstars AllenandtheJean. More proof that the future of sex is social. Talk about it!

In person gatherings with our MLNPstars are always a joyful occasion, and have the feel of old friends convening for a much needed catch-up. When I met Janira Wolfe at the documentary premiere last week she said to me, “You’re exactly what I was expecting. When I first saw you tonight, I forgot that I don’t actually know you.” To which I replied that well, we do know each other! The thing is that our bond — based on trust and communication and the values of MLNP — is deeper than one might expect given it started with her uploading #realworldsex videos through an online form.

And these were the things I wanted to capture and bring to life at Mermaid Ranch. I wanted to bring together our MLNPstars and manifest the experience of MLNP on the spot through conversations, fun, and yes, filming on-location #realworldsex. We are so grateful to Chandelier Creative for supporting this vision and to Thalia Mavros and her crew at The Front for capturing it so completely and in such a stunning way. And, we’re bowled over with appreciation for the MLNPstars who joined us at the ranch — Efi & Walter, FeverDream, and Colin/Gray — our #socialsexrevolutionaries who brought all of the courage, vulnerability, trust, and sexy to our time together.

MLNP is bucking conventional wisdom that says that interacting online is making people feel more isolated. It’s challenging the idea that sharing sex videos online is an impersonal act that trivializes sex, and it’s proof that sharing and watching #realworldsex has the power to transform lives and relationships for the better.

Holy energy shift! Ariel and I feeling the love (and exhaustion) on the last day of our three day shoot

MakeLoveNotPorn is the #socialsexrevolution, and I truly believe that it creates more love in the world. A revolutionary, lasting, and empowering love that has the potential to change the world for the better.

One last trailer for the road! Now please go watch MakeLoveNotPorn: The Social Sex Revolution in it’s full 15 min SFW glory, here! You can read what our MLNPstars have to say about their experiences at the ranch, here and here. And you can rent the #realworldsex videos shot at Mermaid Ranch, here.

We are Constance and Eric, photographers of human sexuality.

About 8 years ago we came up with a concept to abstractly photograph couples having sex; real couples, real sex, all manner of variation. The idea was to render down our subjects to just movement, shape, and interaction; eliminating all labels such as age, orientation, gender, and so on. In doing this, the universal gestures defining human expressions of intimacy began to emerge and how that connects us became evident.

constance and eric

Constance and Eric

About a year into that we started getting calls from couples (and more) wanting to commission us for private shoots. Fast forward ahead 7 years and we have been commissioned to shoot a dazzling variety of sexual expression. 45th anniversary sex, orgies, first time, wedding consummations (one in front of a large group), outdoor lovemaking at 10,000 ft above sea level in the Rockies, D/s play, veterans returning home, you name it, we have shot it. To this day we are still amazed at how the ways to express intimacy are seemingly endless yet, the heart of sexuality still remains intensely human and unifying.

The whole core foundation of MLNP resonates an authenticity with us that we have witnessed firsthand from the hundreds of bedrooms (and kitchens, and dungeons, and stages, and mountaintops, and…) that we have been invited into.

There is no template for sex, no script, and certainly no editing. Pornography is not normal sex in the way that fast food is not normal food, it is fine to indulge but, a steady diet of it will cause immeasurable problems. Sex simply cannot be defined by an industry, it is defined by people. All too often that is forgotten and the limiting cliches of porn are mistaken as real which, in the absence of honest sex education, can pose a real risk to our society.

We have had clients who tried to perform according to what they learned from porn. During the multiple breaks we take during a session, we try to encourage them to make love for themselves, not for the camera. If they are able to break out from the unconscious conditioning of porn, without fail, every single time, those images turn out to be the best from the shoot.

There is a sexiness in authenticity that cannot be faked or staged, we see the proof in our work and we see it in the library of #realworldsex on MLNP.tv.

After close to a decade of still photography only, we have just begun to branch out into the moving image and are looking forward to contributing to the important, and sexy work that is going on at MLNP.

XOXO,
Constance & Eric

Why I love Kimberly Kane: Madam Curator on watching KK’s porn and #realworldsex and why she wants more pornstars sharing their off-set sex on MLNP

$

In my previous life as a mainstream porn script writer — right before becoming Madam Curator — one of my fave ways to slack on the job while looking like I was working and “doing research” was to log in to the company account for Vivid and look at the arty, punky porn in their “alt” section. Here, in a small section of 2011 #pornworld was where I could find streaming videos that reminded me of gay art house filmmaker Bruce La Bruce and the feminist porn rebels who shot weird shit on camcorders in the 80s and 90s, whose work I could only find in my university’s well-stocked Film Studies resource department.

As a performer and director, Kimberly Kane definitely stood out. There were a few teen scenes with her performing that I could watch on the site I worked for, but those followed the same old script. The porn she directed for Vivid Alt was gritty and strange, and while it didn’t necessarily turn me on — the scenes often involved a lot of spit and runny eyeliner — they definitely had a distinct aesthetic, especially in the intro teasing scenes before the usual series of sex acts unfolded in the same order for the same amount of time. Think riot grrrl, or a Courtney Love lookalike having rough sex in a Berlin nightclub.

She had style, and I admired her.

Flash forward to last year when Kimberly emailed me in my role as Madam Curator, and said she had just uploaded her first submission to Make Love Not Porn. Fangirl vibes were inevitable. But I also had no idea what to expect. Another way I killed a lot of time at the porn office was by watching BTS interviews with pornstars, and I thought I remembered one with Kimberly where she said that her videos were more like performance art than a reflection of what really turned her on.

Although it was her idea to share something on MLNP, Kimberly was “really intimidated” by the idea of having  her personal #realworldsex on camera, and it was actually her partner, Drew, who set up the cameras for their first MLNP “shoot.”

It was sweet and understandable to hear Kimberly express some of the same reservations other MLNPstars often have — will anyone really want to watch this? Will they be bored? Will I be awkward and keep moving out of frame? What is it like to not perform for the camera when you’re so used to doing (or seeing) that?

Luckily, it became clear pretty quickly to everyone that Kimberly didn’t have anything to worry about — her #realworldsex videos with Drew are fantastic, and very different from porn. First off, she and Drew are really in love and are very chatty during sex. They enjoy teasing each other, and Kimberly often makes hilarious and cute exclamations like, “I need a sandwich and a nap!” in the middle or at the end of their videos. Kimberly is also very loyal to her trusty Hitachi magic wand and has some clever ways of using it as an erotic torture device and during Drew’s languorous #LickJobs. As a Hitachi fan myself, I’ve learned a thing or two from her about how to wield the wand.
Kimberly and Drew seem to relax into each other when they MakeLoveNotPorn. Often, they literally exhale and say something like, “I just really need to get off today,” and then they do in their own unique, funny, passionate, loving way. Whether it’s shooting an intro while baking banana bread or getting “caught being way too extra for a selfie,” they’ve really thrown themselves in to sharing the everyday #realworldcouple side of themselves, and I’m so happy that capturing their #realworldsexlife on MLNP has had such a positive impact on them.
While I only ever worked as a writer during my stint in #pornworld, my time there definitely hit home just how scripted and predictable most mainstream porn can be. It also gave me the insight that pornstars are pretty much the experts on the differences between what it’s like to have sex on and off set — what’s actually pleasurable and what’s for show. This is why I’m always happy to have more pornstars share their #realworldsex on MLNP. It’s fun to see people who perform sex for a living just “doing them” while the cameras roll. We certainly learn something from seeing the differences, and it seems they do, too.

At MLNP, we want to MakeDisabledLoveNotPorn! This intro by Eva is the first in a series of posts where disabled folks take up space on our blog and talk about what it’s like to be a disabled sexual being. If you’re a disabled person interested in sharing your #realworldsex on MLNP, or sharing your story on our blog, please email Sarah@mlnp.tv.

Hey, I’m super excited to be working with Make Love Not Porn! My name is Eva and I have been in the sex ed field for over 15 years. I didn’t get into it because I wanted to help people or I was a teacher. Rather, it was because I didn’t find any applicable information for me when I was a teenager. I have cerebral palsy which affects my entire body. I use a wheelchair to get around and I’m non-verbal, so I spell out what I want to say on a letter board with a laser pointer on my hat. So in my late teens, I was looking for information about how to incorporate my disability into my sex. I also identify as queer, so that’s a whole other layer. After calling many disability organizations and asking if they have any information about disability and sex and either being told no or being hung up on, I decided to write a handbook. It talks about how to find queer-friendly aides, how to talk to your partner about your disability, how to adapt sex toys, and how to masturbate if you need assistance. Through this book, I was able to travel the country giving workshops on sex and disability. It was an awesome experience as I had people in their 50s coming to me and saying this was the first time they talked about sex ever! Now, I teach online classes on the amazing platform O.school and I’m available for private consultations. If you want to learn more, check out my website: Cripping Up Sex With Eva.

As a disabled person, I have as much right to fall in love and form a relationship as my peers: Meet Sulaiman Khan, founder of ThisAbility

At MLNP, we want to MakeDisabledLoveNotPorn! This post by Sulaiman is the second in a series of posts where disabled folks take up space on our blog and talk about what it’s like to be a disabled sexual being. If you’re a disabled person interested in sharing your #realworldsex on MLNP, or sharing your story on our blog, please email Sarah@mlnp.tv.

By Sulaiman Khan. Originally published on Medium on October 12, 2015.

“Worry”

After recently turning 30 years young, I have been thinking about finding love and building a relationship a great deal lately. I’ve never had the opportunity to meet someone in the past and it’s not as easy for me like my friends since physically meeting people is tough. I would be keen to do so, despite the logistical and perceptional challenges.

It is very difficult for me to form relationships, as meeting people is hard when you are a severely disabled wheelchair user.

I find this is often due to the complexities of accessibility and logistics of meeting people spontaneously. Not to mention that it is hard to go anywhere without my support workers, making it even more challenging to form relationships. Also, despite being fearless and very comfortable going up to people to say hello, I am concerned that the opposite sex may feel sorry for me and not see me as relationship material — the fear seems to take over. I strongly feel people often cannot see past my wheelchair, rather than the hard-working, interesting and humorous person that I am.

Not only do I have the challenge of finding someone who will accept my disability, similarly my culture and Southeast Asian background would have a bearing, with parental expectations to end up with someone from the same culture — but I’m lucky enough that my immediate family just wants me to be happy so I doubt this would cause much conflict in my case; and although my family and friends have their own beliefs, I think if you are happy with someone that is what is most important.

It wouldn’t matter for me if my partner had a different background so long as they accept me for who I am.

And if I do somehow form a relationship and wish to have children with that person, the probability of me being a genetic carrier of neuromuscular disease is high. A doctor told me years ago that my siblings have a 66 percent probability of being a carrier (though this doesn’t affect them from having a relationship or having a family themselves), and people may use this as a reason not to form relationships with disabled people. However, a lot has changed from the past and new treatments (and knowledge about genetics) may be available but more needs to be done to inform disabled people like myself of what the reality is; even if that’s just providing information and greater understanding.

Quite often the media tries to show what is “acceptable” in disability dating, but it usually ends up showing people who are having difficulty and are classed as “undateable‟ or “freaks” This is wrong. I truly feel that just because you’re disabled it doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with you. On the other hand, I feel that able-bodied people should not be frowned upon or thought of taking advantage when in a relationship with a disabled person as well. Society finds it hard to accept anything they don’t understand, but if disabled people are able and wish to form a relationship they should be supported to do so.

This is where I think the creative industries (filmmakers, directors, writers, artists and designers, for example) can have a huge positive impact in changing the media and general public’s attitude towards disabled people who want to form relationships. Also, I think it is fine for some disabled people to say they want to have a relationship with a sex worker or something (which the media seems keen to highlight), as they’re finding it hard to form relationships. Personally, I would prefer not to do this because I don’t think it is a healthy way to build a relationship — though I acknowledge that those who do make that choice maybe not be looking to build a relationship. I would rather meet someone who I can share my life with.

It is society and the media that needs to accept that as a disabled person I have as much right to fall in love and form a relationship as my peers — and not apply arbitrary pressures on those in such relationships. I think, there needs to be much more candid but unprejudiced awareness with regards to disabled people, dating and relationships.

It’s extremely important to have these discussions but to not frame them in such headline-grabbing ways as “freaks” and “undateable”. I would also be delighted to see more relationships in which one or both partners are disabled represented on television. This is how norms are reset and challenged.

Anyway, I’m done worrying about it and I am going to be proactive further to go out and about so I can meet someone this year to just make it happen. Hopefully, my 30th will be an even greater incredible adventure that’s filled with love and forming a relationship too. Ladies, here I come. ¡Hasta Luego —until later!

There’s No Social Sex Revolution Without People of Color

Aria Vega

By MakeLoveNotPorn Ambassador, Aria Vega. Aria is an Atlanta-based sex writer and educator doing her part to build a more sex-positive world. On her blog, Your Heavenly Bodyshe reviews pleasure products and writes about sexuality, bodies, and trauma.

Sex positivity, the movement to free sexuality from shame and stigma, is becoming increasingly mainstream. That’s a beautiful thing! It means the average person has better access than ever to pleasure- and evidence-based information about their bodies. But this access alone is not enough.

Our understanding of sexuality, as individuals and as a society, is inextricably linked to other facets of our identity. When those aren’t accounted for, the image is incomplete, and progress is halted. That’s where MakeLoveNotPornstars of color come in. The more Black and brown bodies that appear on MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, the more accurate the picture of #realworldsex becomes, and every one of us will be better off for it.

5 ways showing people of color (POC) having #realworldsex is vital to the #SocialSexRevolution:

1. Sex positive images of non-white bodies are lacking in pop culture.

You probably didn’t need me to tell you this. The vast majority of non-white sex depicted in movies, television, and pornography is created by and for a white gaze. This creates a warped image of our personhood, and fuels ignorance.

I feel like I can always tell when a sex scene between Black people was actually written and directed by one of us. That’s when our bodies are treated with reverence and respect, free of ugly stereotypes and condescension. These moments are few and far in between.

While we wait for more people of color to be represented behind Hollywood cameras, we can point our smartphone cameras at ourselves. Which brings me to my next point…

2. If we don’t do it, no one will.

As people of color, it’s up to us to produce the images that center our pleasure and best reflect our humanity. We are absolutely entitled to take up space in the world, and we don’t need to beg the powers that be for access to it.

With the ubiquity of smartphones that allow us to both snap and share our lives on the spot, it’s never been easier claim that space. Since you have full creative control over your #realworldsex video, you can be sure that it’s shown through your own lens – literally and figuratively.

3. It can help us educate ourselves.

Due to systemic issues, communities of color are particularly vulnerable to inadequate or misleading information about sexual health and pleasure. As a result, we experience disproportionate rates of STI/HIV transmission, unplanned pregnancies, and sexual assault.

At the moment, the federal government isn’t doing much about these problems. In fact, many lawmakers are doing everything they can to reverse decades’ worth of gains in these areas. Fortunately, #realworldsex videos can help with this too.

On MakeLoveNotPorn, it’s very common to see things like barrier usage (such as condoms, gloves, and dental dams) and healthy communication before, during, and after sex. There’s even a whole #condomhot video category for safer sex inspiration. If people of color get to see people who look like us normalizing these behaviors, the benefits can spread fast and far.

4. We need to see ourselves reclaiming bodily autonomy.

Throughout American history, non-white bodies have been subjected to unfathomable degrees of subjugation and brutality. Black Americans in particular have historically had little to no bodily autonomy. This, of course, due to the horrors of slavery and the systemic abuses that followed it into the present day.

The trauma of our lineage doesn’t need to define us. We can help heal these wounds by reclaiming ownership of our bodies and prioritizing pleasure. This can help us restore and maintain our strength and vitality to go on fighting for a more just world.

5. The rest of the world needs to see us too.

As affirming and validating as it is for people of color to see ourselves on-screen, it’s not just about us. These images are crucial in humanizing us to our white peers. I wish we lived in a world where our mere existence was enough to penetrate ignorance, but we’re not quite there yet. Once again, video content can help with that.

Images have a lot of power in determining how we’re perceived by others. When done right, images have the potential to bridge the empathy gap between privileged and marginalized groups. With MLNP’s platform, we are allowed unprecedented access into each other’s most intimate and vulnerable moments. The opportunities here are tremendous.

MakeLoveNotPorn.tv is actively seeking more creators of color to demonstrate the power behind this type of representation. As with all other social movements, your voices and images are vital to the Social Sex Revolution!

Call out for #metime videos!

Here at MLNP we love us some #metime videos! And, it seems our community does too — our last #metime call out was a huge success and folks are already asking me when they can send in their #realworld self-love videos again! (The answer to this btw, is right now, send them to me right nooowwww! We publish #metime anytime).

Someone once told me some of the best sex you can have is the sex you have with yourself. Making a video that shows off your masturbation style can inspire others to value their solo sexy times. Plus, it can give them (and you!) new ideas for how to explore #metime pleasure. As an anonymous member once told us, watching #metime videos on MLNP “made me realize I could be having a whole lot more fun masturbating.”

That said, in case you need a little extra motivation — turns out y’all like deadlines — I’m happy to report that our next edition dedicated to #realworld #metime will go live in late September and I’d absolutely love it if you would submit a little somethin’ somethin’ as part of it! Especially if it’s your first time sharing a video on MLNP.

Shooting a video by yourself is a great way to get comfortable with the camera and you can easily set up a stationary shot that will make it a cinch to cut your head out afterward if you want to remain anonymous. Just make sure not to shoot too close up! Remember that we want backstory and before and after too.

Are there unique places where you like to get off ? Do you have a new toy to try out? Do you and your partner use mutual masturbation to climax while having sex?

Loud or quiet, long or quick, raunchy or delicate, or however you do it — we want to showcase all the different ways people go about their #metime!

The deadline for submissions is Sunday, Sept 16th. I can’t wait to see what you have to share!

Feeling all, “#metime is great but I want to shoot a video with someone else”? Film your Labor Day weekend #realworldsex!

Please share this call out far and wide!
